I have been studying chapter 6 of the Qur’an: The Cattle (Al-An’am). I have been learning from Ali Gomaa; a leading Islamic scholar and jurist who studied and taught for many years at Cairo’s Al-Azhar University. Al-Azhar has been called the most important center of learning in the Sunni Muslim Muslim world.

Day of Judgment in Islam

In this episode Ali Gomaa continues his discussion of Quran 6:5 and the future judgment that will fall on those who reject the truth,

Quran 6:5
YUSUF ALI: And now they reject the truth when it reaches them: but soon shall they learn the reality of what they used to mock at.
PICKTHAL: And they denied the truth when it came unto them. But there will come unto them the tidings of that which they used to deride.
SHAKIR: So they have indeed rejected the truth when it came to them; therefore the truth of what they mocked at will shine upon them.

Ali Gomaa discusses how the mockers will be punished and tormented for their unbelief.

“Trying to convince them through knowledge or natural disposition is over. Nothing is left but torment. Material intervention is a must. This ayah encourages us to deliver His message (SWT) ¹Abbreviation for the Arabic phrase, Subhanahu wa ta’ala. This expression is used after using the name Allah. The English translation means “highly praised and glorified is He.” and use our minds and knowledge, while applying our natural disposition. The issue of torment is not in our hands, as Allah is the one who will torment them in hellfire. I mean we cannot judge, as we are not on the Day of Judgment. This day is not ours to own….We do not place judgments or judge others, as only Allah Glorified and Exalted Be He has the right to judge and rule among us. After attributing this to Allah Glorified and Exalted Be He, then judging people, punishing them, avenging them and inflicting them with torture is not our place. It is the affair of Allah Glorified and Exalted Be He.”

Day of Judgment – “The subject of the last judgment (yawm al-dīn, yawm al-qiyāma) is one of the most important themes in the Quran…Belief in the last judgment, with the concomitant belief in paradise (al-janna) for those who performed good deeds and in hell (jahannam) for those who did not believe in God and did evil, became one of “the pillars of faith” (arkān al-īmān, cf. Quran 4:136), as these were called by later Muslim sources” (“Last Judgment.” Encyclopaedia of the Qurʾān.).

Da’wa (دعوة)

Da‘wa – “The exhortation to heed the quranic message. The Quran issues its basic invitation (da’wa) to all people: worship and serve the sovereign and unique God alone (Quran 21:25) and practice true religion” (“Invitation.” Encyclopaedia of the Quran).

“The conclusion…is that this matter is related to da’wa (calling to Allah), showing preachers that they should call to Allah (SWT) ²Abbreviation for the Arabic phrase, Subhanahu wa ta’ala. This expression is used after using the name Allah. The English translation means “highly praised and glorified is He.”, through reason, and that they should tell people about Allah (SWT), through universal, material and legitimate ways. They should approcah people through natural disposition. If people disbelieve after all this, we should then leave them to be judged by their Lord. We wait for Allah’s judgment Glorified and Exalted Be He, while trusting Allah Glorified and Exalted Be He.”
