Amr Khaled (عمرو خالد) and Truthfulness Part II
In the previous video, Amr Khaled was discussing different motives for lying.
One of the very famous reasons for lying is saving oneself from an embarrassing situation. A student who fails in an exam and is afraid to tell his parents about it. An employee who made a mistake and does not want to tell his employer about it. A wife whose husband told her to do something and she did not and so she lies so he may not be angry with her. Actually all those are fake reasons. You’d rather admit your faults than hide. It would be much better than being written before Allah as a liar.

It would be much better than being written before Allah as a liar. For Allah may make people know that you are a liar. I will tell you the story of Ka’b Ibn Malek, who was one of the companions of Prophet Muhammad.
Prophet Muhammad ordered all of his companions to come out with him in the battle of Tabouk. All of them were told save for Ka’b Ibn Malek. Ka’b Ibn Malek says that he made a mistake for…
He says then that after the return of Prophet Muhammad from the is battle, he felt the graveness of what I did. He even thought to lie to Prophet Muhammad. I am telling to some people who resort to lying whenever they are placed in an embarrassing situation. Here, Ka’b Ibn Malek found himself in a fix, not with his wife, nor with his boss, but with Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He says that he kept thinking of a way to escape the anger of Prophet Muhammad at me. Until Prophet Muhammad arrived in Medina and when he knew that he decided not to lie no matter what it takes. I went to him and I saw that all hypocrites rushed to him even before me. Each of them thought of a pretext to tell to Prophet Muhammad, and he accepted their claims until Ka’b came to him.
Prophet Muhammad smiled at him with an angry face. Prophet Muhammad was sad and he called upon Ka’b to come to him, asking him about the reason why he didn’t join them. Ka’b said, “By Allah, Messenger of Allah. If I had with anyone else but you, I would have told him anything. Because I can do that. But I fear that Allah may make you displeased with me if I like to you now. I was never better or stronger than I was on that day.” Prophet Muhammad pointed at him saying that this is the only one who was truthful to him. And he told him to go until Allah tells Prophet Muhammad what to do with him.
Then Allah ruled that all Muslims should not deal with Ka’b for a period of fifty days. You would wonder why Allah punished him though he told the truth. It is because Allah wanted to reward them on the Day of Resurrection. After the fifty days, Ka’b said that Allah forgave him along with the other two who were with him.
In this verse “(He turned mercy also) to the three who were left behind; (they felt guilty) to such a degree that the earth seemed constrained to them, for all its spaciousness, and their (very) souls seemed straitened to them, – and they perceived that there is no fleeing from Allah (and no refuge) but to Himself. Then He turned to them, that they might repent.” (Quran 9:118) This means that at the end the truthful will be the true winner. On his way back to Prophet Muhammad he found people congratulating for his repentance. And when he arrived at the Prophet’s, he smiled at him in such a way as it was the moon smiling at him. Prophet Muhammad told him that this is the best day in his life ever. For on that day, Allah forgave him.
Ka’b said that nothing saved him but telling the truth and that he decided to speak nothing but the truth for as long as he lives. Later on Ka’b said that since that day on he told no lies. This story shows you that we should never resort to telling lies. As for hypocrites, Allah told Prophet Muhammad not to forgive them. They will swear unto you, that ye may be pleased with them but if ye are pleased with them, Allah is not pleased with those who disobey. Look to what happened to Ka’b. It is the end of the truthful path.
This is why El Gunain says that being truthful means to say the truth when lying is your only way out. But you would still tell the truth. There is another reason that would make people lie. And that is hating other people and wanting to harm them. Look at Yusuf’s brothers.
Amr Khaled discusses Joseph
6:47-end
“Slay ye Joseph or cast him out to some (unknown) land, that so the favour of your father may be give to you alone.” (Quran 12:9). They lied because they hated Yusuf. A lot of women and men lie only to harm others.
“Slay ye Joseph or cast him out to some (unknown) land, that so the favour of your father may be give to you alone there will be time enough for you to be righteous after that!” The next verse says “They stained his shirt with false blood.” See what they did. They did not only falsify their words but blood as well. Some people do so, telling lies may just start at the tongue but may extend to include all their bodies. After that all they do becomes false. Because of what Yusuf’s brothers did, Allah damns them for twenty.
Prophet Muhammad said once that two men came to him at night telling him that the one whose mouth was torn apart was a liar who says something and people would report it. This is what would be done to him until the Day of Resurrection. Who can take all this for a lie that he once told about someone? We must train our tongues to say nothing but the truth because we can not take the anger of Allah and his Prophet. Our bodies are too weak to bear the pain of our mouths being torn apart until the Day of Resurrection. We want to be written truthful before Allah.
We must be truthful before marriage. Some of us may lie and hid things and after marriage problems may arouse because of this and houses may collapse.
Prophet Muhammad saw a lady calling for her son to come and take what is in her hands. Prophet Muhammad asked if she had anything in her hands and she said yes. Prophet Muhammad then told her that if she had had nothing in her hand, it would have been counted as a lie. But if we tell our children to lie even by saying tht we are not here on the phone they will grow up to see that we were lying and they may like even to us.
We must be truthful to our children, to our wives and husbands, in our trade. We need to be truthful to all people. We need to be truthful even while kidding. Prophet Muhammad told us that we should not lie to people even by way of kidding. He says about such kind of people that one lie that may aim at making people laugh might cause the one who said it go to hell. There are no white lies. A lie is a lie. Prophet Muhammad says that a lie is counted a lie even if it was a small one.
If you insisted on being truthful, if you are truthful with Allah in all that you say and do, you will be written as truthful before Allah. You may be like Abu Bakr Assedik. You may come in a grade higher than that of martyrs. You may wonder why this is because those who are truthful would do and say nothing but the truth. Their intention must be truthful. Martyrs must be truthful first.
I am hereby asking you to be truthful in all that we say and do. I want you to be truthful even with your own selves. I ask Allah to forgive us all and Peace be upon you.”
